Lt. Anna Stupnicka-Bando
Lt. (2013) Anna Stupnicka-Bando, born 1929. President of the Polish Society of the Righteous Among the Nations. During the Warsaw Uprising, she fought in Żoliborz as part of the “Żywiciel” (breadwinner) Group and was, among other things, a nurse at the medical post at ul. Mickiewicza 25. She used the codename Anka (diminutive of Anna). In addition, from 1941 until the outbreak of the Uprising, she and her mother led a young Jewish woman, Liliana Alter (as Krysia Wójcik), out of the Warsaw ghetto and hid her in an apartment in Żoliborz, and this woman, together with Anna Stupnicka-Bando, took part in secret teaching, among other things. Their Żoliborz apartment often housed other Jews in hiding: Ryszard Grynberg and Dr. Mikołaj Borenstein. On September 19, 1984, she and her mother Janina Stupnicka were awarded the medal “Righteous Among the Nations.” She also received the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
